The state pension is changing

Side of RRV with lozenge

The Government is making changes to the state pension on 6th April. You’ll be able to claim the new state pension if you’re:

  • a man born on or after 6th April, 1951
  • a woman born on or after 6th April, 1953.

If you were born before these dates, you’ll get your state pension under the current scheme instead.

The full new state pension is reported as being £155.65 a week, but the amount you receive will depend on your national insurance record.

Will my NHS pension be affected?

Your NHS pension will be unaffected by the changes to the state pension, but your national insurance contributions will increase. As a member of the NHS pension scheme you currently pay a lower rate of national insurance (NI), but the upcoming changes will mean that you no longer get this NI rebate. You can find out more at www.gov.uk/yourstatepension, or by downloading this useful PDF.

You can also watch some handy videos about the changes on the Government’s pension YouTube channel.
