Today see’s the start of the annual Business Continuity Awareness Week, with this year’s theme being cyber security. Given recent events this couldn’t be more relevant, and throughout the week there will be articles, animations and posters around this topic.

So what is cybercrime? This is the term used to describe criminal activities involving computers, networks and the internet. As society becomes increasingly reliant on the internet, the risks and threats to those using it widen. As well as computers, these risks and threats extend to your smart phone, tablets and even Smart TV’s. Examples of cybercrimes are:

  • identity theft
  • hacking
  • phishing
  • any sort of scam or hoax
  • spyware

Within EEAST there are information and security policies which are designed to keep us safe by using the latest firewalls, virus checkers and the blocking of some content. The biggest risk to staff is when an individual falls for an online scam by not taking basic precautions to prevent any of the above. Throughout this week we will be taking a look at how you can protect yourselves online and will also be taking a look back at the recent Ransom ware attack. Additionally, there will also be an ongoing exercise across all sectors which aims to test the Trusts business continuity plans.
