Trust update from Dorothy Hosein - 6 April 2020

Video transcript: Dorothy Hosein video on 6th April

Hello colleagues

Today, Monday 6th April, I know we’ve just had that wonderful weekend of lovely weather and I know we’re in lockdown and I’m sure many of you were either working or were staying indoors, like myself. I managed, in between my working schedule, to cut my grass, so I was delighted, I got a little bit of the rays! But please keep encouraging those around you to stay put because it does seem to have an impact and social distancing is what we’ve been asked to do.

I want to welcome a number of colleagues who are joining us into our service this week. We’ve 90 firefighters today being inducted – really excited about that and they’ll be joining across the region. So, very very welcome to all of them and it’s tremendous.

On the back of that I just wanted to give you a bit of an update of where we are, as we try and accelerate our plans to increase our capacity. We’ve got a big recruitment campaign out there at the moment and many many people coming forward such as the student association and universities and everybody else saying ‘how can we help’ get more folks into your business. So, I want to thank them for that, it’s a tremendous community spirit all around but we will be continuing to recruit people for many many roles within the organisation over the coming weeks and I’ll keep you posted.

I want to talk to you today about professional standards. Many of you out there are just amazing and a real role model for our service about professional standards. What I will say, and I have mentioned this is in pretty much every communication I have had with you recently about PPE. We have absolutely got adequate supplies, but again it’s about using them responsibly so that we can support our system as we go into this very challenging peak period. So I want to thank you for all your doing around that and lets keep playing our part in the national and global picture around Covid-19 – its really important.

I also want to say a big thank you to our Unison colleagues who are working in partnership very closely with us. I’ve always said the partnership between the union and ourselves, there’s the same colleagues that they have, they’re members are our colleagues and we must work together. I want to say a huge thank you because it is important that we’re all on the same page and a huge help to us, so again thank you for that.

Obviously this week, we’re going into Easter and I’ll get back to you before the weekend comes but please practise that social distancing, keep up the wonderful work you’re doing. What we do know and you will have seen it on the national news that here in the East of England we haven’t begun to accelerate in terms of our activity but I can tell you it has kicked off in certain areas particularly around the Hertfordshire area and we’re beginning to see increasing activity around Covid in the Essex area.

So have a good week, I’ll be back in touch towards the end of the week and many thanks.

Dorothy
