Update from Anthony Marsh - 14th August

Anthony Marsh

As promised at the beginning of last month, we have now fully kitted every rapid response car and ambulance, including spare vehicles to ensure you have every piece of equipment you need to deliver good patient care. This means that missing kit and changing kit should now be a thing of the past and you will be able to carry out your vehicle checks at the start of your shift without any issues. I understand how important this is and you have my reassurance that we will continue to uphold this, so that you have the tools to give our patients the best care. The next 120 new emergency ambulances, the first of which start to arrive next month, will all be delivered with new equipment on board.

At the end of last week, a newspaper in Bedfordshire reported that tea and coffee on stations are only free to use for visiting crews and that frontline staff based at the station have to bring their own. This is absolutely not the case; all staff are free to use tea and coffee on every station and we issued a statement clarifying this to the media as soon as the article was published. I understand how long your shifts can be and this provision is for use by all staff, wherever you take your break.

I would encourage you to please look out for new guidelines on Ebola, which will be published in the next few days and be aware of the symptoms of the disease and familiarise yourself with the correct actions to take if you suspect a patient has the condition. Whilst the threat to the UK is low, it is best to equip ourselves and be prepared, to ensure your own safety and that of the wider population.

Finally, welcome to our 42 student paramedics who started new courses in Norwich and Chelmsford this week and to the 23 who will be joining us on Monday in Melbourn – this will be our tenth course and will bring the total number of student paramedics to 190. This is a great achievement in eight months; well done and thank you to all involved.
