Update from Anthony Marsh - 18th June 2015

Chief Executive Dr Anthony Marsh

This month we held our annual business continuity exercise which tested our directors, non-executive directors and heads of departments on their knowledge of EEAST policies and procedures to ensure the organisation meets national standards. The exercise covered social media and recruitment in particular and our long-term planning, as well as how we deal with every day issues. Business continuity is extremely important to all emergency services as it enables us to plan how we would continue to operate despite serious or major incidents. The findings of the day will be presented to the executive management board so that we can address any gaps in our knowledge or plans, to ensure we are always prepared.

This year’s professional update (PU) is moving ahead with all of the train the trainer events now completed and the programme beginning to be rolled out in some areas. This year’s two-day PU covers trauma, pulmonary embolism, obstetrics and mental capacity, amongst other subjects and many of these have been chosen in response to staff requests. Please also ensure you complete your mandatory learning workbook which is another way of supporting your development and refreshing your learning and means we are able to maintain high standards of safety and patient care.

In the more restrictive financial times the NHS finds itself in, we should all be doing our bit to help the Trust save money and strengthen the frontline. Please consider your daily working life and how you can contribute; filling up with bulk fuel at stations where you can and with normal fuel at garages when you can’t, turning off your monitors and the lights in your office before you leave for the day and being more aware of wastage and efficiency. It is something small we can all do but collectively we can make a big difference and make sure we can put more money into frontline paramedic recruitment and training.

And finally some dates for your diaries, the annual public meeting and next Board meeting is on 30th July in Hertfordshire and this year’s Quality Account will be published on 30th June and the annual report at the beginning of July.
