Redistribution of mechanical ventilators

Ops Update Icon

The Trust has received a request to support the wider NHS with our mechanical ventilators to provide additional support for acute hospital units in increasing capacity. Several you have also identified this as an option to assist our critical care colleagues.

There is always a risk-based decision to be made in these circumstances and, after careful consideration, we have made the decision to remove and redistribute our equipment throughout hospitals within our region where the need is anticipated to be significantly greater and the benefit higher.

It is recognised that for some incidents a ventilator adds value and each LOM resource and specialist (critical care) resource will retain a ventilator alongside their LUCAS.
Support for the correct dispatch, use and support will be available via the critical care desk on channel 202.

The ventilators will be removed during March 24th and 25th, with the equipment being picked up and returned to Barton Mills.

Colleagues are asked to link with their LOMs at the start of their shift or during the huddle for the correct place locally to drop the units (and any vent circuits) off.

UNISON health and safety has been consulted as part of this change and are in agreement with this management action to support the patients of greater need.

We thank you for your support with this and hope that the rationale for needing to make this rapid change to our established practice, further communication around will be disseminated as soon as possible.

Thank you all for your immeasurable commitment and assistance at this unprecedented time.
