Compassionate Conversations is the new appraisal process that enables our leaders to pay close attention to all staff, really understanding the situations they face, responding empathetically and taking thoughtful and appropriate action to help.

Based around the four pillars of Performance, Talent, Values and Wellbeing - Compassionate Conversations provides a holistic approach to regular discussions.  Allowing staff the opportunity to engage with their manager and together they will  discuss their performance and agree clear, SMARTER specific role objectives: 

  • What each employee needs to achieve in their role
  • Clear measures of success and improvement
  • Opportunity for feedback and suggestions for improvement

The new process will empower our staff to identify what development is needed to support them. Meeting and achieving their role objectives and linking future career aspirations that may be a lateral move or promotion. They will also discuss how the individual/team/manager and senior leaders demonstrate through everyday practice that they live EEAST’s Vision, Values and Behaviours.Taking a proactive approach to discussing an individual’s wellbeing both in work and outside the job and raising awareness of support that is available.

Supporting our leaders is integral to the success of Compassionate Conversations.  There are simple, user friendly tools available for staff and managers to support discussions and build effective working relationships. Resources can be found on the dedicated EAST24 Pages

Lindsey Stafford-Scott, Deputy CEO & Director of People & Culture has produced a short film explaining how our managers and leaders have acted upon feedback from staff to create this new appraisal system. A new e-learning programme has also been designed which features our staff showing the new Compassionate Conversation appraisal in progress. All documents and resources are available 24/7, 365 days a year, anytime, anyplace, anywhere.
