What is organisational development?

Side of RRV with lozenge

Organisational development (OD) is about changing how we, as individuals and as a team, deliver our services to patients, partners and colleagues. It is about changing our culture, to one where the way we interact with each other reflects the values of the organisation.

Everyone one of us is involved, regardless of our role, department or level. We will all need to change and adapt our own behaviours to help us continue to improve as an organisation, solve problems together and cope with changes to the environment we work in.

How do vision and values fit in with this?

The vision sets out where we are going and what we want to achieve. Our new vision is: “Innovative. Responsive. Excellent. Always patient driven. Always community focussed.”

The values set out how we are going to achieve that vision, i.e how we will work and the behaviours we will exhibit in reaching that vision. Our values are:

  • respect – we value individuals, including our patients, our staff and our partners in every interaction
  • care – we value warmth, empathy and compassion in all our relationships
  • teamwork – together as one, we work with pride and commitment to achieve our vision
  • quality – we strive to consistently achieve high standards through continuous improvement
  • honesty – we value a culture that has trust, integrity and transparency at the centre of everything we do.

The organisational development programme will lead change throughout the service. It is about developing service improvement initiatives, engaging, motivating and developing our staff and your skills.

It is also about understanding what the ambulance service stands for and how we fit into ever-changing health care environment. Through this organisational development programme we aim to change our culture so that our staff are empowered to deliver an even higher standard of patient care to our communities.

The programme will cover leadership, management, coaching, mentoring, patient care, bands 1-4 development and apprenticeships, appraisals and personal development plans, staff engagement, culture change, staff survey and performance management.
