Accreditation of student paramedic course

Transparent EEAST crest

Since we launched our student paramedic programme last year, we have been working with Health Education East of England who commissioned two Universities to design and deliver the programme that leads to eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC).

It is the responsibility of these Universities, Anglia Ruskin University and the University of East Anglia, to gain the appropriate approvals and both have been developing their course and working with the HCPC, who has to review and approve the course. Unfortunately the feedback to the Universities is that both courses require more work and it is likely neither University will be able to commence the programme until January 2016 at the earliest. This is an issue that the Universities have to resolve and whilst we will help them where we can, the Universities have to be the ones to get the accreditation, so that student paramedics can complete the recognised pathway.

All student paramedics can be assured of the work we are doing to resolve this, which includes looking at other education providers. Students on cohorts 01 – 09 have received a letter and will receive another one with further details in the next couple of weeks; all other students will receive a letter very soon.

We appreciate that this is disappointing but due to the huge number of vacancies the Trust had at the beginning of last year we had to find a way of providing a better response to patients. We will do everything we can to enable our student paramedics to progress on the pathway as soon as possible and ensure we have the most supportive measures in place.

If you have any questions, please speak to your line manager or email training@eastamb.nhs.uk.
