Cambs defib event hailed as 'huge success'

A public education event has been hailed as a “huge success” after dozens of villagers learnt life-saving skills in Cambridgeshire.

Around 50 people were taught CPR and how to use a defibrillator at the open meeting of Offord Cluny and Offord Darcy Parish Council.

Rob Hubbard, an Emergency Medical Technician for the Trust, and community first responders (CFR) Adrian Moore, from St Neots CFR group, and Clare Johnson, from the Witchford CFR group,  attended the event on 23rd April, which was hailed as a big success.

The theme of annual meeting was about the purchase and installation of defibrillators – one for Offord Darcy and one in Offord Cluny.

Rob, who also teaches lifeguards life-saving skills and community water safety in his spare time, said: “The awareness stand was to inform the community how a defibrillator works alongside calling 999 and performing CPR. The stand was a huge success, with nearly every attending person getting involved and people were phoning their friends and family to come down.

“Many people were surprised just how simple it is to use an AED. A defibrillator isn't a replacement for an ambulance, but when the chance of survival decreases 10% a minute without effective CPR, the community of Offord recognised the importance of public access defibrillators.”

“The event sparked interest from other community groups, so we may be running further life support sessions in the future.”
