Cambs Sergeant wants your help for water safety scheme

A police officer has been commended for a water safety scheme that uses signs to help pinpoint the locations of drowning emergencies – but now he needs your help to expand it.

Sergeant Mike Jackman, of Cambridgeshire Police, has devised a lettering system for signs at risky water sites so callers can identify exactly where they are if they have to call 999. Each sign carries a letter that relates to a specific location.

Kevin Larter, Norwich EOC Dispatch Team Leader, said: “Call handlers are often faced with panicked callers who are unsure of their exact location or the nearest access to an incident. This can cause a delayed response, and some confusion between attending emergency services control rooms.

“I would like to thank Sergeant Jackman for coming up with this worthwhile initiative. I am certain that this signage will vastly improve any future responses to the locations he has identified.”

Sgt Jackman has worked closely with us and the fire service to find sites that could be used by young swimmers in Cambridgeshire, but he’d now like to expand this across the region."

Kevin added: “This signage will also hopefully act as a reminder of the dangers of open waterways and people will be responsible and remain safe when having fun at these locations.”
