Change to sudden death process in Bedfordshire

EEAST RRVs and amb on scene

Bedfordshire Police is making changes into the way it deals with sudden deaths, which will affect us.

From 1st February, if you are attending a death in the community and believe the cause to be natural, police will no longer routinely attend. This will include calls to private homes or care homes.

Bedfordshire police will attend if the death is:

  • in a public place
  • place of work
  • where the identification of the deceased is not known
  • or if next of kin is not aware of the death, and they need to be identified so that a sympathetic message may be given.

They may also attend if the premises cannot be secured due to absence of next of kin or other responsible adult.

If you attend a death that you believe to be unnatural, preserve the scene and contact police. The police will always attend the following cases:

  • Homicide
  • Suspected suicide
  • All accidents / RTC, including workplace accidents
  • Infant/child deaths (Up to 18th Birthday)
  • Deaths suspected to involve drugs, substances or alcohol
  • Otherwise suspicious for any reason
  • Or in/presenting from custody (e.g. prison)

The new pathway for sudden deaths is available on East24.
