Could you name our patient care bundles?

Our ambulance quality indicators (AQIs) and national clinical performance indicators (NCPI) identify key clinical areas of practice and assist us to identify where we can look to further improve the care we give to our patients. Here at EEAST, these include:

  • stroke
  • asthma
  • STEMI
  • limb fractures
  • falls in older people.

Each one has an associated ‘care bundle’, containing the things we should be doing (and recording) for every patient we see with that condition. That could be anything from recording two pain scores pre and post treatment through to administering certain drugs.

But would you know what the care bundles were if you were asked?

The Trust has produced a short guide that covers some of our clinical AQIs and their care bundles, which you can download here, and you’ll also soon be seeing some handy reminder posters on a station near you.

Making sure we complete these care bundles is really important for our patients - each care bundle contains specific actions that are clinically recognised to improve their care. It is also important to record if something is unable to be done, and why (such as peak flow). Here at EEAST, they also link into national indicators, which form a basis for measuring the effectiveness of the NHS ambulance service as a whole.

The NCPIs continue to be developed to look at different areas of care. The next pilot is around care for patients with mental health issues.
