Forty-eight hour junior doctor strike to affect emergency care

Steth and keyboard OPT

As you’ll no doubt be aware, there is a 48-hour junior doctor strike starting next Tuesday (26th April) at 8am.

The strike differs to those previous because the stoppages will involve emergency care. This means that between certain hours, the strike will include A&E, intensive care and maternity units.

The emergency care strike will be:

  • from 8am-5pm on Tuesday 26th
  • from 8am-5pm on Wednesday 27th.

The industrial action will finish at 8am on Thursday 28th.

Here at EEAST, we will be putting measures in place during the two-day period to try and minimise any impact on our service, patients and staff. These include:

  • placing additional clinicians in EOCs for call triage, so we can maximise ‘hear and treat’ opportunities for patients, and direct people to alternative care pathways where appropriate
  • placing senior officers in all major hospital A&Es in the region that don’t currently have a hospital ambulance liaison officer (HALO)
  • implementing a full Gold command and control cell to help manage any disruptions.

A full copy of our operational plan for the junior doctor strike will be made available on East24, should you wish to read it in more detail.
