Looking after suction units

The failure of suction units has been fundamental in two recent serious incidents, so all staff are asked to ensure their unit is functioning properly at the beginning of every shift.

Your daily check should involve:

  • removing the suction unit from the charging bracket to check the battery power. Switch the unit on to the maximum (500+) setting, all battery lights flash a number of times then go static, showing the state of charge. If it is showing two lights or less, exchange the unit for a fully charged one
  • checking the suction power.

If all quick tests are passed then switch the unit off and place back on the vehicle bracket and ensure the battery charging light is illuminated.

Faulty equipment should be reported to the clinical engineering team by email clinicalengineering@eastamb.nhs.uk. If the device fails in use, please report it via Datix. A faulty equipment tag should be completed and attached to the unit.
