Make Ready concept approved by Board

The Trust Board have approved the concept of starting to move to a Make Ready service at the Board meeting today (Thurs 26th November) in Great Notley.

One of the many benefits of the “Make Ready” model is to remove the necessity for clinical staff to undertake functions, which we already know from both our’s and other’s experiences can be safely and consistently undertaken by employing Ambulance Fleet Assistants (AFA) and Vehicle Cleaning Operatives (VCOs).  To date, our existing VCOs and AFAs have demonstrated that they are capable of delivering a strong quality assured “product” to patient facing colleagues. Equally, patient facing staff have praised the delivery of this “product” and promoted its roll out to other locations.

As and when we move to a fully functioning “Make Ready” model, there will clearly be an imperative to reduce the current levels of out of service hours by ensuring that the VDI time is limited to focus solely on the basic legal checks required by the driver of a vehicle.  Any work practice changes required to support the gradual transition to the fully functioning “Make Ready” model will obviously be subject to staff side engagement and consultation.

The next step is to develop a detailed business case. This will provide the detail of how the make ready model would operate and include the investment required to enable it to happen and of course staff will be fully engaged with the process.  We will keep you updated in Need to Know.

Paul Henry, Head of Operations Support, said, “I am delighted the Board have approved the concept of moving to a make ready system.  This will have huge benefits for staff and patients, benefits that have been demonstrated by other ambulance services who have already moved to this system.”
