Making research strides: intubation and stroke trial success

Staff with patient on stretcher at accident and emergency

Last month, the Trust has reached some amazing milestones with AIRWAYS-2 and RIGHT-2!

AIRWAYS-2, a study that evaluates the differences between i-gel and intubation for patients in cardiac arrest, has involved more than 300 paramedics across our region.

We are one of four ambulance trusts taking part in this study and so far have contributed nearly 1,400 patients of the 7,000 enrolled patients.

Helen Hall, Research Paramedic, said: “I would like to thank all dedicated paramedics who have and continue to contribute to the future of practice and evidence-based care.”

Last week, the RIGHT-2 trial received EEAST’s 100th patient. The project is a paramedic-led study which tests the pre-hospital administration of GTN patches vs. sham patches by paramedics, in FAST positive patients who have a score of two or three. We have received some fantastic feedback from the University of Nottingham’s RIGHT-2 trial team:

‘[The] EEAST paramedics continue to impress the regional stroke research teams with their patient recruitment. Thank you everyone.’

We’re making great strides, but the research team is always on the lookout for more paramedics to participate in this study. If you work out of the stations listed below and are interested in taking part, please contact the team, via research@eastamb.nhs.uk.

RIGHT-2 stations: Attleborough, Bury St Edmunds, Clacton, Colchester, Cromer, Diss, Harwich, Longwater, March, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Peterborough, Sudbury, Thetford, Stowmarket, Waveney, and Weeley.

If you are planning to undertake your own research or have been asked to participate in a research study, please contact at research@eastamb.nhs.uk to discuss your project. You can also check out our website for further useful information.
