New clinical career pathway proposed by Board

A new development pathway for our clinical care staff has been shared this week that will provide clear progression opportunities internally here at EEAST.

Based on career frameworks and our predicted service needs, the pathway should provide staff with the ability, training and support to develop their clinical skills right through to advanced specialist paramedic level.

The proposals were put forward by the Executive Team as part of a wider plan to improve both our culture and EEAST as a place to work.

The Board will now be approaching Health Education England and our commissioners to ask for their support and the financial backing to get the pathway in motion, so it’s not yet a done deal, but Chief Executive Robert Morton is confident that this is the right thing to do both for colleagues and patients.

“That age-old phrase of ‘people are your biggest asset’ could not be more true for us here at EEAST,” he said. “We need to ensure that we not only get our clinical skill mix right so we can give patients the most appropriate care, but also make EEAST a place where our colleagues want to stay and progress.

“I’m pleased that we have got to this point; the plans mean that those with the knowledge, experience and necessary skills will be able to develop internally, so in theory someone could join us as an apprentices and work their way up to specialist paramedic level. I hope now that we can gain the support of our commissioners and the wider healthcare system to proceed.”

There will be ‘direct entry’ points in the system for clinically trained professionals who want to join EEAST, and the Board is also committed to exploring similar career and development opportunities for those outside of the clinical arena.
