Update from Dr Anthony Marsh - March 27, 2013

Dr Anthony Marsh

As you will read later in this issue, more than 200 emergency care assistants (ECAs) have passed their pre-entry exam on the pathway to become a technician, which is an excellent achievement. I send you all my very best congratulations and look forward to the time when you take up your new roles and the extra clinical responsibility you will have to treat patients. The next course for ECAs will be in Stansted on April 28 and the other course programmes will be published next week.

I am particularly pleased as this progresses one of my six immediate priorities for EEAST; to upskill our ECAs to become technicians and our technicians to become paramedics. One of my other priorities, to recruit 400 student paramedics in 2014/15, is also moving forward with 85 offers made to date. The first course starts in Norwich on April 7, with another five following in May, June and July and we have two more assessment days next week to maximise spaces on these courses.

On Friday (March 28), I will be talking to the Board about the priorities which make up my performance improvement action plan for EEAST. All of our work will be centred around these six priorities so I hope you will give your full commitment to achieving them. I will share the details of the plan with you next week.

In last week’s HR ezine, the new locality director role was advertised. The three locality directors will lead every aspect of service delivery for their area, (Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire; Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire; and Essex) so we have leaders who can better support our staff, communities and stakeholders locally. All three directors will also sit on the Board. This will not be advertised externally so I encourage you to apply if you are interested.

As I mentioned in last week’s issue of Need to Know, we will be talking to staff early next month about the new structures, once we have completed the necessary work to make them fit for purpose. The streamlining of the management structure is already reducing management costs and placing more paramedics on ambulance. I am sorry the restructure is taking longer than I anticipated but I really want to get this right. The appointment of the locality directors will help progress matters.
