One step closer to becoming EMTs

A group of ambulance staff have cause to celebrate after progressing to the next stage of their clinical careers.

Twenty-seven ECAs, 14 from Norfolk and Waveney and 13 from Beds and Herts, have successfully completed their exams and assessments to put them one step closer to becoming EMTs.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Morton, speaking about the benefits said: “I’m really proud of everyone, they have all put themselves through a lot of hard work to get to this stage. I wish you all the best in this next step in your careers.”

James Ashdown, who has been in the Trust for four years, started at Hemel as a vehicle care operative (VCO) before becoming an ECA, and is now at the new West Hertfordshire station. Upon completing his training, he said: “I really enjoyed this course and I am happy with the better level of care I can bring my patients. I think more of these courses should be run as I feel they give the staff the progression they have been waiting for.”

With a further 60 places scheduled next year within the plan, one of the service’s priorities is still to develop and train staff internally to improve performance and patient care.

Nikki Irons, Training and Education Manager, said: “These programmes are preparing our staff to take the lead in situations they will have previously assisted on. There’s been good feedback that the courses have been engaging, interesting and are helping staff to take their skills to the next level.  The courses are demanding and the students have to be dedicated and prepared to put in the hours but with hard work they will reap the benefits.”

Many of you have got in touch asking for information on the next ECA to EMT courses; we’ll be featuring an article in next week’s Need to Know to try and answer some of your questions.
