Open your eyes to human trafficking

RRV with blue lights

Cambridgeshire Constabulary are running a Get Closer campaign in August, which focusses on tackling human trafficking and are asking for your help to raise awareness of the issue.

Human trafficking, also known as modern-day slavery, is happening across the world and recent operations have uncovered numerous sites of labour exploitation in Cambridgeshire, including Operation Endeavour in Fenland.

There are 30 million slaves today, more than at any other time in history, and men, women and children are being forced to work for very little money, sometimes without pay at all. A video showing the true stories of two victims of labour trafficking is available on YouTube.

Some of the signs to look out for in victims are:

  • poor mental health or abnormal behaviour: a patient may be fearful, anxious, depressed, submissive, tense, nervous or paranoid. They may exhibit unusually fearful or anxious behaviour after bringing up law enforcement and may avoid eye contact.
  • poor physical health: a patient may lack health care, appear malnourished or show signs of physical and/or sexual abuse, physical restraint, confinement, or torture.

Anyone who suspects human trafficking is happening around them, whether it may be where they live, work, socialise, should report it to police by calling 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. That piece of information, no matter how big or small, could potentially save someone’s life and give them back control. More information on is available on the Cambridgeshire Constabulary website.
