Paras complete mammoth 19.1 miles in aid of mental health

Two paramedics from Essex have completed the Blue Light Walk in Blackpool, to raise awareness for mental health.

Laura Szpurko and Claire Ruddy, based at Chelmsford, joined colleagues from other emergency services to complete the 19.1 mile walk from Broughton to the Blackpool Tower. All the money raised went to mental health charity Mind.

Laura said: “It was really tough and at the half way point our legs were feeling pretty sore but we battled through the pain! There was so much support from all emergency services and passers by giving us a beep and a cheer as they drove past. It was an amazing atmosphere, and all for a great cause.

“We decided to take part in the walk as we have had a couple of our own colleagues who have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder in recent years and have been supported by the service and other agencies. I'm pleased to say they are doing very well with their recovery. Mental health is not talked about enough within the emergency services and I hope this walk and money raised will help to change that and continue to improve the support to all that requires it.”
