Securing and storing medication appropriately

Yellow kit bag

Following a reported incident, the Trust would like to remind colleagues that it is vitally important that they take reasonable care when handling medication, including making sure it is accounted for and stored appropriately.

This can be achieved through:

  • placing drug bags within the designated storage area within the ambulance or RRV
  • locking the medication bags away when they stored; open drug bags can be quickly closed and stored even when you are with a patient or offloading
  • locking the ambulance or RRV at hospital, on standby or at the scene of an incident
  • being generally vigilant and only removing medication when it's required
  • keep all keys on your person rather than in the locks
  • reporting anything suspicious regarding people near ambulances/RRVs, or at any station, hospital or other area.

A dynamic risk assessment based on patient care, and ability to secure the vehicle, will need to be undertaken. It is an expectation that medication can be secured relatively easily, taking the points above into consideration.
