Stickers introduced to label glucose

Glucose stickers

Following two further cases where 10% glucose has been given in place of 0.9% saline solution, all bags of glucose (10% glucose 500ml and 5% glucose 100ml) will have a red sticker applied to the back of the pack to assist with identifying the product (the sticker will say “caution, glucose for IV use”).

This is not to replace best practice; please take care to ensure that solutions for infusion are carefully checked before administering.

This includes checking that:

• the container has the correct drug name on
• the container isn’t damaged
• the solution is clear and free of particles
• the drug hasn’t passed its expiry date.

This information is also available as a clinical bulletin to print and put up at stations.
