Testing the Laerdal suction unit

The failure of suction units has been fundamental in two recent serious incidents, so all staff are asked to ensure their unit is functioning properly at the beginning of every shift.

Your ‘how to’ checklist in checking your unit…

  • Hold down the ‘test’ button and turn the dial to 500+.
  • Once the first two battery indicator lights are illuminated, release the test button.
  • At this point, occlude the suction until all four lights have illuminated up the scale, back to the first light.
  • At this point the test is complete and you need to interpret the results.

Interpreting the results

Testing for occlusions

  • The first of the battery indicator lights will be on
  • The test lights should register at 100 or less; if the indicator shows more than 100 it indicates a potential blockage

Testing vacuum power over five seconds

  • Press test, and the second of the battery indicator lights will come on
  • The test lights should register 300 or more; if the indicator shows less than 300 there is not enough vacuum power and there may be a leak

Testing vacuum power over 10 seconds

  • Press test, and the third of the battery indicator lights will come on
  • The test lights should register 500 or more

Testing for leaks

  • Press test, and the fourth of the battery indicator lights will come on
  • The test lights should register at 450 or more; if the indicator shows less than 450 it indicates a leak
