Then and now: Taking a look at a 1950’s Daimler Ambulance

Biggleswade ambulance station may just seem like any other station within EEAST, but behind the garage doors sits one of the Trusts most interesting assets, a vintage 1950’s ambulance.

Lovingly restored and maintained by our own staff, including recently retired Rod Taylor, the vehicle looks as good as new and makes for interesting viewing.

As you can see, things were certainly very basic back in the 50’s. Notice the lack of storage space? It just wasn’t required.

It wasn’t just the vehicles themselves that were basic, responding clinicians also had very basic kit. There was no need for cupboards and lock ups for various drugs and spare equipment, as these weren’t used at the time.

What do you think it would have been like working on one of these vehicles? Let us know in the comments below.
