East of England Trauma Network Update

The EoE Trauma Network have made a minor change to the way secondary transfers are conducted for major trauma patients.

There is no change to pre-hospital triage, this change only relates to secondary transfers from ED to ED. Secondary transfers are sometimes required when a trauma patient ends up in a trauma unit and needs transfer to the major trauma centre, for specialist/lifesaving intervention. Until this change, the East of England has one major trauma centre (Addenbrookes) and all major trauma secondary transfers would be booked to Addenbrookes. 

 

As of 19^th January some of these patients may instead be transferred to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. The hospitals which are included in this new pathway are James Paget Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn, West Suffolk Hospital and Ipswich Hospital. These are still commissioned journeys that will be booked in the same way as normal (IFT). Occasionally these transfers are supported by our HEMS teams.

 

Just to reiterate, there is no change to pre-hospital triage.
Please continue to apply the EoE trauma triage tool to all suspected major trauma patients. As has always been the case, if any of the attending pre-hospital clinicians (including all critical care resources) feel the patient may benefit from an alternative triage destination to that guided by the triage tool, please speak to the NCS consultant via CCD or directly on 0300 330 3999.
