Update from Dr Anthony Marsh - 5th June 2014

Chief Executive Dr Anthony Marsh

I am extremely pleased with some of our achievements this week, especially so with the delivery of our 147th new ambulance to Peterborough station on Saturday, completing the first phase of our fleet update. This programme has been delivered a month ahead of schedule and 68 Skoda Scouts, as well as the 147 ambulances, are now on the road. It is a huge success to have completed this since January, so I would like to thank the operational support teams, in particular fleet, medical devices and frontline technologies, for all of their efforts to make this happen. We are now looking ahead to the next 120 ambulances, which will be delivered by March next year and will complete my target to have all Trust vehicles under five years old.

Another accomplishment this week was that all of our first group of student paramedics passed their classroom assessments and have now moved on to their driver training in Barton Mills. Congratulations to you all and I wish you well for the next stage of your course. We have welcomed our fourth cohort of student paramedics to Chelmsford recently, following the start of courses in Cambourne and Melbourn and the next course will start in Norwich on Monday (9th June), which brings the number of student paramedics in training to 97. The total number of offers we have made is 204, which is a clear sign that I am delivering on my promises – I said we would recruit 400 student paramedics and we are about to start our fifth course, and we are still in the first quarter of this financial year. We have also made offers to more than 30 graduate paramedics since the start of this year and more than 10 offers to direct entry technicians. Recruitment is ongoing and I am confident we will reach our targets.

We have also had some good positive media coverage recently which I wanted to share with you – the appointment of Matt Broad as Locality Director for Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire was covered in the Ipswich Star and Matt was also interviewed on BBC Norfolk and Suffolk. The Hertfordshire Mercury and Gazette in north Essex featured our excellent latest patient survey results and a visit to a school in Burnham was covered by the Maldon Standard. A couple of members of staff also took part in a feature on Radio Five Live on Tuesday (3rd June) about how members of the public can help us when we are driving on blue lights, it generated a really interesting debate. As always, don’t forget to get in touch the Trust’s communications team to pass on your news by emailing communications@eastamb.nhs.uk.
