Waveney in the running (man) for charity

Dozens of Waveney-based staff have taken part in a dance challenge to raise funds for a charity close to their hearts.

Around 30 staff were involved in the Running Man Challenge – the internet dance trend that has gone viral and been embraced by emergency services across the world.

The video, which was filmed during their spare time at Waveney depot, aims to raise awareness and funds for Ollie’s Heroes.

The cancer charity aims to help people with the costs of living and travelling to hospital and also provides vital support for families across the area.

Jamie Gray, a senior paramedic in Waveney, set up the charity in memory of his son. Ollie passed away in September after a five year battle with leukaemia and treatment that included a bone marrow transplant.

Ben Law, a student paramedic at Waveney, said: “The family was dealing with separation for three months during Ollie’s bone marrow therapy at Bristol and travelling for procedures. With little or no odds to hold on to due to Ollie having Down’s syndrome, they were unsure he could handle the treatment.

“Nonetheless, he managed to endure most of the treatment with a great big smile on his face and was known to be the hospital mascot inspiring others in such a sad situation.

“Although we are deeply saddened, we would like to help raise money for others in this same situation. We would also like to give a huge thanks to everyone who gave up their free time, participated and was involved in the making of the Waveney Running Man challenge for Ollie’s Heroes.”

The ambulance staff have now challenged the casts of Holby City and Casualty to take part in the dance.
