Business continuity week: Loss of electricity

Side of RRV with lozenge

This week (16th-20th May) is Business Continuity Awareness week. Organised by the Business Continuity Institute, the week aims to raise awareness of the importance of business continuity and resilience in organisations such as ours.

The theme for the week is return on investment and, in addition to the obvious benefits business continuity has in the event of a disruption, it will look at the other advantages it may have.

Loss of electricity

What can go wrong?

  • No lights / computers / heating / phones / IT / fridges
  • Security systems down, problems with door access, some doors default to open
  • Building unusable
  • Inability to deliver services

What can you do?

  • Ensure National Grid (0800 783 8838) are aware of failure – don’t assume they know
  • Install UPS for critical computer equipment to prevent damage
  • Consider back-up generators
  • Consider home working if possible and appropriate
  • Predetermine an alternative site
  • Have processes/plans to hand to respond including medicines management and building security
