Clinical Update: Group A Streptococci (GAS)

Cliinical Update Icon

You may be aware there are a larger number of group A streptococci and invasive group A streptococci infections being recorded in the UK than there have been in previous years.

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a common bacteria. Lots of us carry it in our throats and on our skin and it doesn’t always result in illness. However, GAS does cause a number of infections, some mild and some more serious.

Invasive GAS (iGAS) infections are caused by the bacteria getting into parts of the body where it is not normally found, such as the lungs or bloodstream. In rare cases an iGAS infection can be fatal.

Please refer to the attached document for further detail and guidance regarding GAS infections.

This is an ongoing situation being monitored by national groups including UKHSA and NHSE. Please look out for any further updates in the days and weeks to come which will be provided internally with the most up to date information.

Kind regards
