Fit for the Future - Demonstrating Impact update

Fit for the future logo

The Fit for the Future theme Demonstrating Impact is focused on making sure the Trust uses data effectively to drive success and improvement at all levels.

To support the direction of this workstream, a number of staff engagement sessions were delivered in February and March 2022.

The questions explored included:

  • Does EEAST use information to make good decisions, at the right time?
  • How do you feel about using data and information in your area?(Local/Trust Level)
  • What do you think are the benefits of using data and information effectively in your area?
  • Do you have local data you use? Do you have clear processes in place for quality assuring and validating?
  • How can the Trust help you to be more confident and change the way we use data and information?

Some of the themes captured included:

  • Staff concerned about the accuracy of data
  • Staff would like further training
  • Staff would prefer data that was consistent across the Trust to aid interpretation

Below are some of the actions that have been implemented as a result of this feedback.

Data SOP Template Created

A data SOP template has been created by the Trusts Information Team and shared with departments across the Trust. This SOP will allow departments to record the steps they take, pull data and record how they quality assure and validate the data. Having this template will promote standardisation across the Trust and will increase consistency in terms of the way data is extracted and reported on. It will also help to reduce the single point of failure risk where only one person knows how to pull the data for reports in a department as there will be a SOP document for others to refer to.

Making Data Count – Training on Evolve:

Developed by NHSI, this course is available to all staff members and will give you an introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts and provide you with the tools, knowledge and skills to be able to use these charts to analyse, understand trends in data and be able to narrate and describe the information to others. The course consists of six 1-hour modules/steps which you will be able to access through Evolve.

Report Writing Course and further training:

Following feedback for the engagement sessions, 18 staff members were put through an externally provided report writing course. The Demonstrating Impact Team will be working with our Organisational Development team to look at other development opportunities for staff to develop their data analysis skills further.

Integrated Performance Report (IPR)

The integrated performance report used by the Trust Board as an intelligence tool has been developed using the Making Data Count principles. The report provides intelligence to inform decision making and includes data metrics from the Clinical, Finance, Operations and People Services directorates. This is a report that is developed with the Trusts information Team on a monthly basis and ensures consistency in terms of the reporting.

We are currently now working to develop Phase 2 of the IPR which will focus on sector level data to be used at accountability forums.

Performance and Accountability Framework

Work has commenced to on the development of a Trust Performance Management Framework. This framework will:

  • Clearly outline the approach to accountability for the Trust, including monitoring, oversight and delivery
  • Set a framework for performance monitoring against criteria set for the Trust to deliver
  • Ensure there is a clear approach to tracking and delivery within the performance framework to support the organisation to achieve its objectives

A number of Engagement sessions will be taking place through the month of August 2022 to support this work. Please lookout for further communications around these sessions.
