Fit for the Future – Looking to the future

Tom Abell’s monthly blog: January 2022

Last autumn I introduced our Fit for the Future Programme, the purpose of this being to help us organise the way we are going about improving our service, so we can deliver better care to our communities and make the Trust a much better place to work.

The first year of this work is focused on how we lay the foundations from which we can build our improvement, this involves everything from getting some of our core processes right, to starting to challenge ourselves on our behaviours, to making sure we have the right number of people within all our services who are trained up to meet the demands ahead.

There are five main workstreams – culture, workforce development, system partnership, capability and capacity and demonstrating impact. The diagram below gives you more detail on each of these.

Those involved in the programme meet regularly to make sure we are making progress and we will start sharing these updates with you so that you get a sense of the changes that are taking place and how they will impact upon you.  Part of this will be a series of short podcasts to give a sense of how the workstreams will shape our work and begin to make the difference we all want to see.

Each individual workstream is also engaging with the people who will be most impacted by their work. This started with a number of engagement sessions related to a range of topics with over 167 people booking on to these via Evolve, and I am grateful to all those who participated. It is clear to me from the number and range of participants that people are really keen to be involved, so look out for ways to engage with the programme over the coming months.

In this update, I wanted to remind you that our Executive recruitment drive is now nearly completed. Recent appointments have included:

  • Marika Stephenson has now joined us as Director of People Services
  • Emma De Carteret has been appointed Director of Corporate Affairs and Performance.
  • Simon Walsh has joined EEAST as Interim Medical Director (while Dr Tom Davis is away from the Trust)

Over the next few months:

  • Katie Vaughton will join us as Director of Integration in February
  • We will welcome Hein Schaeffer as Director of Culture and Strategy in April; in the meantime Steve Mason will cover this important role.

Interviews have just been completed for the permanent Director of Nursing, Clinical Quality & Improvement so I look forward to announcing the new postholder soon.

These new directors will play a key role in driving forward several of the key areas of work under Fit for the Future and you can click here to download an updated version of our EEAST Board poster

Staff health and wellbeing is a key area for the Trust and I hope that you will have seen our Wellbeing Trucks out in your area. We have a wellbeing strategy in place, have revamped the wellbeing hub on East24 to encourage people to access the services and are looking forward to our new Head of Wellbeing joining us in February. We are also training more Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) practitioners to help people following traumatic events so that by February we will have 130 in place.

We have invested additional resources into rapidly dealing with the employee relations cases that people have raised and tackling grievances and disciplines more quickly and effectively.

Working effectively with health and social care partners within the individual ICS areas, MPs and other stakeholders is crucial for continuing to deliver good patient care and developing new care pathways. We have just surveyed these stakeholders to understand better how we can work together better. We received some really positive feedback about the Trust which we can build on for the future.

Our Quality Improvement Programme/CQC workstream is currently focused on the 11 conditions highlighted in our CQC inspection in 2020.  Hopefully you’ll have seen the weekly Need to Know Now updates which have been providing updates on our work in this area. You can the previous updates here.

We are also working on opportunities for you to be involved directly with the workstreams. For now, if you have any questions, you can email them to OCE.EEAST@eastamb.nhs.uk  where a member of our executive team will answer them on the Thursday briefing.
