New courses for Community First Responder Volunteer Trainers

Some of our CFR Volunteer Trainers, have been serving local CFR groups for many years. We are hugely grateful to them for supporting the CFR Groups, the Trust and our patients.

The CFR Training Team are working hard to support our volunteers' efforts in the community. One of the key new initiatives is to make the CFR Induction Course (Level 3 Award for First Responders on Scene: Ambulance Service Community Responder) available to existing CFR Volunteer Trainers.

Places are limited, but we have courses running over the next six months in training centres across the patch, so you should be able find one convenient to you. Please email

cfrtraining@eastamb.nhs.uk and refresh your skills across the whole scope of practice.

Here are some of the things that CFR delegates are saying about the AFROS:ASCR courses:

‘As one step in the process of me returning to help with future CFR training courses, I completed the FAQ Level 3 Award for First Responders on Scene last month and I am glad to say we all passed.  Many thanks to Mark, Cheryl, Martin, Sue, Ron and Steve for all their hard work and dedication.’

‘This current course is much more advanced than previously, with all the additional  eLearning as well. It was well structured and very informative, with plenty of time for hands on practice, with professional help there to answer any questions.  It was also fun but the need to be proficient and professional was always emphasised.’

‘One aspect that I have always found interesting is that everyone is different. Everyone has a different thought process. Everyone has a different mindset and so it was on this course. The differing backgrounds and experiences all contributed to an enjoyable experience. However, one thing that was common among all of us and this includes the trainers, was that each one of us wanted to give 100% effort and that is what I think worked the best for all of us.’

‘Over the past years I have developed a number of different ways of treating patients because everyone is special and has unique problems and concerns, This course provided an ideal opportunity to try different ideas in a training environment.’

‘Working with this group definitely contributed to my learning. I gained a wider perspective and I think the way I look at things and act now will improve.’ Dave Spiceley

‘In all honesty I would challenge any trainer to do this if they can and not to attend as “an observer” and watch from the side-lines, for a variety of reasons which include, picking up new tips and reasoning for things that are being taught – latest survey guidance etc. Other reasons include being assessed and told of your short comings – Yes, Steve, I will remember to switch the defib on before placing the pads! By being a student you also had down time during the assessment process so you were able to pick up on the conversations the other students were having about fears and concerns about the role ahead of them and it took me back to when I first qualified – exactly the same issues’.  George
