New FERNO track chairs

Transparent EEAST crest

A new FERNO track chair, which makes it easier to transport patients downstairs, has been put on every new ambulance that was brought into service in 2014.

The new chair comes with a set of tracks, which can be attached to the chair to make it safer and easier to descend stairs.

All staff will be trained in how to use the chair. Please ensure you have read the standard operating procedure which can be found on East24 and below; and also the user manual, which is available on East24.

The new chair will be rolled out in the rest of the Trust’s fleet later this year.

Ferno Compact 2 Track Chair

This operation must be undertaken by two trained personnel. Max capacity 200kg or 32 stones

Pre-Inspection

Prior to distribution of the tracks, a rivet was fitted to chairs to prevent the use of the 4th (highest) position of the handle to stop non trained personnel from using the chair with the tracks. Do not use the track on a chair that has not had the rivet removed to enable this 4th position, as this position is specifically designed for using the tracks down stairs.

Manual Handling

Wheel the chair to the patient with the track fitted if possible, otherwise carry the track separately from the chair to reduce the risks from manual handling.

Stowing

Stow the track in its case, with its operating instructions, separately from the chair and store it securely in the vehicle.

Additional Guidance

This chair is designed so that it can be used as a normal carry chair.

Following a dynamic risk assessment, where the track is not suitable, for example on tight turns or spiral staircases, be prepared to carry the patient without the use of the tracks.

On a staircase with steps that turn, it is advised to take a wide turn (as far as handling will allow) to gain maximum benefit from the tracks. Staff at the bottom of the chair may need to press down on the chair to gain additional traction on the tracks.

On a staircase with an interim landing, it is advised to move to the inside of the turn to maximise the space for the head-end operator to manoeuvre around the corner.

When wheeling the chair over flat ground the head end operator should only tip the chair back to its natural balance point. Tipping the chair back further than this will cause the operator to unnecessarily support additional weight of the patient.

When wheeling a patient over uneven ground, as part of a dynamic risk assessment, consider walking backwards. The second operator should look out to ensure a clear path.

Follow the inspection, operating, cleaning and maintenance procedures in the FERNO Compact 2 Track Chair User Manual. Keep the copy of the user manual with the track.
