Newly qualified technician hits the road in mid-Essex

The Trust’s latest emergency care assistant (ECA) to qualify as an emergency medical technician (EMT) through the Trust’s internal programme says he is now in a much better position to help patients.

Stuart Jackson, who works in Chelmsford, is now able to administer different drugs, can assess patients more thoroughly, and make the decision whether to leave a patient at home.

Stuart said: “I’ve always wanted to work my way up in the ambulance service and build up my skills to be in a better position to help patients. The course was really good and I’ve now completed a few shifts as an EMT and I’m really enjoying it.”

Following a six-week clinical course in June, Stuart completed his 90-page portfolio of evidence, which demonstrated how he has put his newly taught skills into practice.

“I handed in my portfolio last week, which I’ve been working on for the past five months. I had brilliant support from my mentor and colleagues at the Trust throughout writing it, they were always on hand to help and let me know I was on the right track,” Stuart added.

Sandra Chick, Senior Locality Manager for mid-Essex, said: “Stuart has worked extremely hard to complete the required elements in record time, he has done a fantastic job and is our first internally qualified EMT in this area. He has made an excellent start to his career with the Trust and is making a real difference to patients.”

Stuart found out about the plans for the Trust’s programme of ECA progression at a staff meeting with Chief Executive Anthony Marsh in Chelmsford in January. Every ECA in the Trust will be given the opportunity to progress to become a technician if they wish to and 35 will have completed a course so far this year, once the current course finishes in Peterborough next Friday.
