Non-Emergency Non-Clinical Drivers: Invitation to Support Service Colleagues

Ambulance Side Angle

During COVID-19, the Trust, along with other ambulance services, onboarded a new role of non-clinical drivers (NCDs) to work alongside existing ambulance staff.

NCDs are typically serving or retired Police, Fire or Ambulance services colleagues with recent blue-light driving experience and are re-assessed to the same standard as existing ambulance colleagues.

The role has been used in other ambulance services over the past 2-years and for this coming winter, the aim will be to increase the number of NCDs and also expand the programme to invite existing non-clinical and support staff within EEAST to participate.

The role of non-blue light NCD will be similar to the existing NCD roles, but will not drive vehicles under emergency conditions (blue lights).

Support service colleagues who are interested in working on the front-line in an non-blue light NCD role are invited to register their interest through the TRAC link below. The link will be available through until 21st October, and colleagues will need:

  • Category C1 on their UK driving licence, with a maximum of 3 penalty points,
  • Permission from your line manager to undertake the initial 2-day course and to undertake future operational shifts,
  • An enhanced disclosure and barring service check, which will be undertaken by Recruitment.

The initial 2-day courses are planned to begin in early November. You can apply using this link.
