Result of the Cannula Survey

Emergency Response

Thank you to those who took the time to complete the recent cannula survey. We have now reviewed your responses.

The feedback from 633 HCPC registered staff members has illustrated a firm preference towards returning to the Becton Dickinson (BD) Venflon Pro Safety cannula.

Becton Dickinson have assured the Trust that they have taken corrective actions to mitigate against a repeat of the FSN in May 2021 which led to the recall and product switch. BD has implemented the corrective actions to the port valve and has reverted to radiation (E-beam) sterilization for the BD Venflon™️ Pro Safety (VPS) Needle Protected IV Cannula.

As such, the Becton Dickinson cannula will be returning to the Trust in the next few months. We will release further communications when the product has been received.

The survey was brought about following various conversations with staff, including this item being discussed on our Thursday Executive Q&A sessions.

As an organisation, we value your feedback and we hope that the re-introduction of the BD cannula demonstrates that, wherever possible, changes can be made to make your working life easier and ensure the utmost care and safety for our patients.
