Temporary pension rules extended

Money

Back in March 2020, the Government published an coronavirus action plan, which set out measures to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.

These measures included removing barriers to employment to allow recently retired NHS staff and social care workers to return to work to help increase resilience. The plan specified that if retired members of staff returned to work, there would be no direct impact on their pension benefits.

The measures covered in the plan were temporary suspension of:

  • the 16-hour rule in the 1995 Section
  • abatement for special class status holders in the 1995 Section who retire and return to work between age 55 to 60
  • draw down abatement in the 2008 Section and 2015 Scheme

Following a consultation from the Department of Health and Social Care the government has agreed to extend these temporary pension rules from 24 March 2022 to 31 October 2022.

This means that for any of our staff wishing to return to work after retirement, these benefits will be in place until the end of October.
