We Are EEAST Briefing and Executive Q&A - Thursday 20th April 2023

This week's We Are EEAST Briefing and Executive Q&A was led by CEO Tom Abell.

Introduction from Tom

Starts @ 00:09

Ends @ 06:44

Questions

Q1 – Why is the new Pre-hospital Practitioner role (which has been created to increase our number of healthcare professionals) being incentivised, but the 'qualified paramedic' recruitment, is not. Are they not both recognised as equally important to recruit in to?

Starts @ 06:57

Ends @ 07:48

Q2 - Has it ever been discussed that people on shift should receive some kind of incentive/bonus too, when overtime staff are paid even more?

Starts @ 07:50

Ends @ 08:21

Q3 - I would like to know why we are not allowed to claim either payment or TOIL for attending training in our own time for the wound closure course?

Starts @ 08:23

Ends @ 09:31

Q4 - Can we look at getting the BBC websites unblocked from our IT system, would seem crazy to block them, you can’t even have the BBC radio on in the background through your laptop?

Starts @ 09:33

Ends @ 10:26

Q5 - I understand the reason to incentivise recruitment, but what are you doing to incentivise staff to stay? Will there be a loyalty payment for existing staff? When will there be a clinical development pathway for Paramedics?

Starts @ 10:28

Ends @ 12:28

Q6 - Paramedic here, I have attended many Good Samaritan activations in my local area, and I find it frustrating that I will do CPR for upwards of 35/40 minutes before a crew arrives (with No O2/AED). So, I enquired about staff responding (voluntary) and was told that it is being trailed, but not released in all areas, why is this? Surely staff who are willing to do this should be allowed, especially in areas SO consistently far away from any resources.

Starts @ 12:30

Ends @ 13:37

Q7 - Will there be any chance of non-clinical secondments moving on to permanent positions or are we still just employing just paramedics?

Starts @ 13:40

Ends @ 15:01

Q8 – Why was the MARs policy only open for such a small window of time?  What's the value/benefit of this to the Trust? Thank you.

Starts @ 15:03

Ends @ 16:26

Q9 - I am concerned that it is too easy to become a GoodSam responder. Responders have on occasion been unprofessional and do not have experience with speaking with grieving families. How can we be sure of 'quality' in terms of the responders and the service they are providing?

Starts @ 16:28

Ends @ 17:46

Q10 - PTS seem to be falling over and unable to meet their contract commitments for hospital discharges. Long waits in the A&E for take homes with hospitals having to use private contractors. What is being done around staff planning to provide adequate cover?

Starts @ 17:51

Ends @ 20:28

Q11 - Are redundancies part of time to lead?

Starts @ 20:30

Ends @ 21:02

Q12 - Surgical face masks. Is the service looking at making them as when required rather than mandatory?

Starts @ 21:03

Ends @ 22:09

Q13 – An ECA is band 3 and are sent now to every job, cat 1’s if nearest resource. The role has changed over the years and more demand is being put on ECA level.  Such as, many more skills in their scope of practice being implemented, which is more worthy than a band 3. A suggestion, more new staff could be recruited into the role if it was band 4, also to retain our current staff also. Is the banding of ECA going to be looked at in the near future?

Starts @ 22:11

Ends @ 23:57

Q14 - Do you have any update on time to lead? When can we expect to start hearing about any management structure changes?

Starts @ 23:59

Ends @ 24:52

Q15 – For those on frontline that do not have an iPad (like bank staff), we cannot access East24 unless we log in via a Trust computer. Are there any future plans to enable East24 to be accessed from outside the Trust?

Starts @ 24:54

Ends @ 25:36

Q16 - Hi Tom, can you please confirm whether or not it is still a requirement to take temperatures upon attending a trust site? When I attended my local office this week, I was surprised to see the thermometer station had disappeared.

Starts @ 25:38

Ends @ 26:42

Q17 - This week’s Executive message mentions "Peterborough EOC". I thought we only had EOCs at Norwich, Chelmsford and Bedford. Has this changed?

Starts @ 26:44

Ends @ 27:20

Q18 - It seems there are many LOM positions being blocked by people waiting to retire. I'm sure many of these LOMs are still passionate about the role but some seem fed up and do not inspire people like me who are keen to progress. Would something similar to the MARS offer be suited to some of these managers?

Starts @ 27:22

Ends @ 28:06

Q19 - Why are so many band 7 positions and secondments advertised that have to be Paramedics such as frequent falls team, clinical management and as such when there are so many long term EMT's that have much more experience that could bring so much more to the role than a newly qualified paramedic (not knocking paramedics as such).

Starts @ 28:10

Ends @ 29:35

Q20 - Thank you for providing the opportunity to ask questions directly.

Starts @ 29:37

Ends @ 29:47

Close from Tom

Starts @ 29:55

Ends @ 30:17
