Reminder of NHS pension choice deadline

NHS logo

On 1st April, a new NHS pension scheme will be introduced that will have a normal pension age (NPA) that is the same as the individual’s state pension age (SPA).

Members of the 1995 scheme, who will automatically join the 2015 pension scheme, will therefore have a higher NPA.

Due to these changes in NPA it was agreed by the Department of Health and NHS trade unions that 1995 section members, who will join the 2015 Scheme on or after the 1st April, will receive another opportunity to move their 1995 Section membership into the 2008 Section. This is called Choice 2.

This may be advantageous to some members who intend to retire closer to their new NPA because the 2008 Section has a higher accrual rate and NHS pension benefits can be increased further by the application of late retirement factors.

NHS pensions only sent a letter to those who were eligible to make a choice. If you did not receive a letter please do not be concerned; there is no further action for you to take. We have a list of staff who are eligible and will ensure that the Choice 2 letter reaches you if necessary.  If you received a letter, then you have until 16th March to make a decision.
