Thursday 10th June - Leadership message from Dr Tom Davis, Interim CEO

Dr Tom Davis

Welcome to this week’s leadership message which, for the first time, is also being delivered straight to your inbox. This change reflects recent feedback from you on how we can communicate and engage better at EEAST. Whilst it is hard to get it right for everyone, you have told us you want more targeted emails and more visibility of the leadership  - so this is one simple action we have taken immediately.

The other main feedback theme was around increasing your opportunities to have two-way engagement. You mentioned local huddles led by line managers, and also with senior managers and leaders. Obviously COVID has had an impact here, limiting or stopping regular face-to-face meetings. Getting this regular engagement in place is really important to you, and to the organisation, so we are looking at how we can safely get these up and running again. Please remember too that we hold weekly ‘We are EEAST’ briefings with members of the Executive Team at 4pm every Thursday. This is an opportunity for you to hear from Executive Directors and to ask questions. The video of the session is then available on Need To Know and we are always happy to take questions after the event. You can send your questions to oce.eeast@eastamb.nhs.uk.

One of the highlights of the feedback was the high levels of awareness for the ‘Speak Up, Speak Out and Stop It’ campaign we started last October to help tackle poor behaviour. It’s great to see this level of recognition, but you rightly expect things to change when concerns are raised. This graphic shows a summary of the actions taken over the past months. Please do take a look.

Our latest snapshot on performance is here and as you can see, call volumes are increasing as lockdown restrictions lift. Thanks to your hard work and planning, we managed to attend over 83,000 call-outs in May, of which just under 7,000 were category one.

EEAST will have a visit from OFSTED this week to check how our apprentices are being trained and looked after. We are also expecting a Care Quality Commission follow-up inspection in the coming months, to check on the difference our action plan progress is making on the ground. We will of course keep you updated on these important visits.

Finally, I am delighted that Tom Abell, our new chief executive, has confirmed he will now be joining us full time in early August. Tom is already attending our executive meetings and I know he is looking forward to getting out and about as soon as possible to meet the great team here at EEAST.
